How is Developmental Delay identified?

Developmental delay is typically suspected either by parents, family members, or the primary care clinician. This suspicion may develop through observation, medical assessment, or asking questions about development. The diagnosis of developmental delay is confirmed through specific assessment of each area of development. If you have any concerns your medical practitioner will be able to assist you with referral to a paediatrician or relevant specialist for further developmental assessment. Assessment will assist to:

Determine areas of development that are delayed
Determine the severity of delay
Identify if there is a need for early childhood intervention services
Identify areas which need further evaluation, either medical or developmental
